If the Trailer Isn't Working, Neither Am I

Checking the hitch at the house. Last week the trailer seized up right here.

Hey everyone, it's Lawson.

The dump trailer and the truck are the whole business. If one of them is down, I don't have a job that day. That's not a saying. That's just how this works.

Big equipment costs a lot to buy. It costs even more when you skip the boring stuff, because then you're paying for a repair instead of a grease fitting, and you're sitting in the driveway while somebody else's garage still needs to be emptied.

Last week that's exactly where I was.

The trailer started acting up

I was at the house trying to figure out why the trailer was seizing up. Not a fun way to spend an afternoon. I had work on the books. The trailer wasn't interested.

I was down at the hitch going through it when a neighbor walked over. He watched for a minute, then pointed at the hydraulic box. Loose wire in the electrical connections. That was the problem. I would have been out there a lot longer without him.

So thank you to that neighbor. That's Middle Tennessee. People still stop.

What I actually do to keep this stuff running

Most of the maintenance on this job is the truck and the trailer. Oil and the obvious truck stuff, yes. But the trailer is what I have to stay on top of, or it lets me know.

Grease is the big one. There are several points on the trailer and the hitch that need it or they don't move like they should. Hitch, coupler, the dump side. I grease them. It takes a few minutes. It is a lot cheaper than a shop invoice, and it is a lot cheaper than telling a customer I can't come because the trailer won't dump.

I don't have a fancy shop. I do this in the driveway, same as last week.

No equipment, no work

People see the truck and the trailer on a job and think that's the whole picture. They don't see the afternoon you lose when something sticks, or the wire you didn't know was loose until a neighbor catches it.

I started this with a small trailer and grew into the dump trailer because I couldn't keep up without it. That thing has to work. School, lacrosse, jobs after the bell. There isn't a backup sitting in a warehouse.

If I let maintenance slide, I don't just get a repair bill. I get a week where I can't take jobs. For a business my size, that's the whole week.

What this has to do with your pickup

When you text me for a quote, you're betting I show up with a truck and a trailer that actually run. That's on me. Grease, wires, hitch, all of it.

If you've got junk in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, Nashville, or anywhere we cover, I'm still taking jobs. Text 615-987-9876. I'll tell you straight what I can haul and when I can be there.

Stay after it.
